Messages in the Sand

Here in Florida, even though it is February...it's already starting to heat up again. While a few more months of winter-weather would be fabulous, the sunny weather does provide a lot of opportunities for fun beachy pictures!

And what could be more fun that these awesometastic flip flops that imprint the message of your choice into the sand?!

What a great way to leave your mark and get some fun photos- they'd be adorable for Save the Dates!

This is one of those "Mannnn, I wish I had thought of that" things. Seriously, what a cool idea.

With that said, you can order some of your own from Flipside Flipflop Etsy Store!

Three Generations Photo

There is no other love quite like a mother's love, unless it's that of a grandmother's of course. My heart completely melted when I saw this photo showing three generations of unconditional love.

Attack of the Groomzilla

Brides are always the ones who get the rap for being over dramatic, unrealistic, emotional, etc.etc.etc.

Truthfully, Bridezillas are few and far between. Majority of the brides we've worked with and witnessed have been an absolutely joy of bridal beauty. Honestly!

Awesome Groomzilla via Updates, Live

...sometimes, however, a groomzilla comes out to play.

A friend of mine recently sent me an article that was honestly almost too ridiculous to be true. The article went a little something like this:

A groom, upset that the wedding photographers missed the last dance and bouquet toss, decided to sue the photography company.

...six years after his 2003 wedding. If that's not absurd enough, he wants them to not only reimburse the $4,100 he paid for the photos, but also the $48,000 that it cost to put on his wedding.

Oh wait. There's more- he and his bride ARE DIVORCED NOW.

Now, I don't know the details, they weren't my clients, but here is my take, maybe the photographer had a package with a time limit, and maybe - giving the photographer the benefit of the doubt, he let the couple know that his time was quickly approaching...

Regardless, if you are unhappy with the service of your vendors (any of your hired wedding professionals) 6 years is not the amount of time to wait before letting them know. Let them know right away, and you can always work with your wedding planner to help - but never wait longer than, 2 months after your event to speak your mind.

I mean .... Seriously?!?!

I personally think one of my favorite parts of the article is where the Court Justice quotes Barbara Streisand's "The Way We Were":

“This is a case in which it appears that the ‘misty watercolor memories’ and the ‘scattered pictures of the smiles ... left behind’ at the wedding were more important than the real thing,” the judge wrote. “Although the marriage did not last, plaintiff’s fury over the quality of the photographs and video continued on.”

To read the full article, go here.

We weren't sure whether to laugh or drop our jaw in a way that showed how completely appalled we were.

So everyone, I hope this showed you exactly how NOT to treat your vendors. This is a Zilla-free zone (that applies to Bridezilla, Groomzilla, Vendorzilla's and Godzilla...although he may be the least scary of the bunch).

Flower Girl Dress

Photography by: Caroline Johnson

I love this image for so many reasons! First, I think it's adorable that the Flower Girl is helping the bride ger ready, so sweet!

I love this because this flower girl dress, tutu and leotard combination is just so stinkin' cute!

I love it because you can see how much the Flower Girl is concentrating on getting the shoe on just so.

It's true a picture is worth a thousand words. I think everyone sees something different in an image. And that is what makes photography at your wedding so worth it!

Summer Blogosphere Series Part 10

For part 10 of our blog series, I wanted to share this post I came across on Wedding Bee. I just thought it was the cutest thing ever. Their blog is a fantastic resource for brides! It's great to see the thoughts and perspectives of brides just like you! And it's fun to read.

I know the first look makes everything easier on the photographer and other vendors (including us planners), but there is something so romantic about not seeing your significant other until you walk down the aisle on that day. I've always been very traditional in that sense.

All this being said, I am now in love with this idea of a non-first look. You get to hold your love's hand and talk to them without actually seeing each other. Just take a peek at these photos by Danny Boyle Photography and you will fall in love too.

On a Stick

After playing dress-up in the PhoBooth at Ms. Debbie's a few weeks ago, these mustaches and lips on a stick would definitely make for a lot of fun at a reception!

6 Reasons to Hire a Pro

I promise this is the last of our Hire a Freakin' Professional... post extravagazza!

I was chatting with Russell Martin (a professional photographer) and he brought up 6 good reasons from a photographers point of view on why to hire a pro.

1. Will have a complete set of backup equipment

2. Will probably be familiar with the venue and know the best places for great photos.

3. Will be able to help plan your wedding timeline to achieve the best lighting for their portraits and make the best use of the available time. (if you plan a sunset wedding you better have a first look or the bride and groom portraits will be done in the dark)

4. Will remain professional under a stressful situation

5. Will have professional lighting equipment for most situations and will know how to balance artificial with available light

6. Will typically be familiar with the order of most religious ceremonies and will be sensitive to their different requirements

See, more than just great pictures!

References

Don't be afraid to ask for references. Please.

No matter who you are meeting with, if you feel comfortable calling other vendors, do it. Or ask your vendors when you are meeting with them. Ask for references.

Ask for both past brides and/or clients as well as vendor references.

Really it's okay.

Professional Photographer

Yesterday, we talked about professional photography and what a difference it can make in your wedding. If you think about it this way, your wedding is a production. An elaborate play-like production, if you will.

If your budget cannot tolerate a $15,000+ photographer, consider hiring that photographer, but hire them for their lesser package. You will have amazing images. Just less of them, or less time with that photographer.

You may want to check a photographers credentials. Check references. Ask other vendors about that photographer, they may post great work on their website or blog, but what if they haven't called their clients back in 9 months, or never produced an album for a client they promised they would. These are concerns that can be handled with a phone call!

Photography by: Rae Leytham Photography (notice this photograph was taken in a dark room at night, if the photographer was to take this picture with an on camera flash, there would be no picture, the photographer had to light the entire room from behind in order to still get the "the shot" = professional)

Hire Professionals

I feel like I've been on a tangent lately about hiring professionals. This is your wedding, you want it to be amazing. You want it to be perfect! And I know you wouldn't hire a dentist to cut a mole off of your back and tell you if it was cancerous or not.

So why would you hire a photographer off of let's say C.raig's List, the one person who will document, your most amazing day, the person who will provide you with the one thing you'll have after your wedding to remember all of the details, to recall your friends and most precious family members that celebrated your wedding day with you.

And sadly, in some instances the last family event that your elder family members may attend!

Okay, stepping off of my soap box now... but read this, the point of the post to begin with.

Photo by: Rae Leytham Photography (check out the bright background, and how you can can still see the bride and groom's faces and the color of her dress and the detail of her gown, the blue of the sky, the feather embelsihment in her hair....professional.)

Jill and Josh an incredible wedding in Gainesville Florida at the Thomas Center. Their wedding was filled with both tradition and tons of personality!

We had so much fun working with her family who lives in South Florida and having their wedding at the historic and beautiful Thomas Center.

The boys wanted to do their reinactment of The Last Supper.

Thanks Jimmy Ho for some super fun photographs!

A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Your photographer is there to capture moments, moments that are frozen in time forever.

These moments capture emotion, sadness, happiness, love, a tender kiss, embarressment.

Yup.

Even embarressing moments.

This photograph to me, even though, I've never met these people, I couldn't tell you their names, where this wedding was, what state, what country, what city, nothing. This photograph tell me that someone was making a speech, and the story they were telling was incredible, it captured the entire room. Had everyone's undying attention, and then there was a slight pause and story was told that was in that gray-area-of-stories-that-shouldn't-be-told-at-weddings.

And hysteria broke out, and the person giving the speech had to pause for a moment for laughter.

That is what this picture tells me.

Cambodian American Wedding - Part 2

Part II of Lisa and Edgar's American Wedding Ceremony.

Remember to look at their amazing Cambodian Ceremony posted previously! Here are some of the gorgeous details at Golden Ocala. I LOVED the incredible pink cloth Dan Hathcock (Unforgettable Events) hung outside for their cocktail hour! preview_035 preview_036 Inside Golden Ocala: preview_037 preview_038 preview_039 preview_040 preview_041 preview_042 preview_043 As we move into the images of Lisa and Edgar dancing with their mothers, I wanted to tell some about what both of them as well as their families have overcome in their lives. After getting to know them throughout the last year and a half, I was so moved by everything they have victoriously lived and thrived through. I just love the human spirit and the absolute joy and love I get to see in my couples and their families. Because her father has passed away, Lisa chose to dance with her mother and first gave a very moving speech about what a wonderful support her mother has been. When I first did their engagement session so long ago Lisa told me about her family history and I was embarrassed I knew very little about the Cambodian Genocide where nearly a third of the Cambodian people were killed in a horrible human tragedy. Lisa’s parents escaped the Khmer Rouge and the genocide and came to the US where they were married in 1982 with no property. Lisa’s father, Heng Lim, had to abandon the medical school he started in Cambodia and worked as an electrician. Lisa’s mother was also stripped of her Cambodian education and had to work in warehouses and as a waitress. While on vacation visiting family in Philadelphia, Lisa’s father was the victim of a hate crime in the middle of the night and killed on Father’s day in 1990. I’m tearing up just writing about this. Lisa’s mother, Mala, moved to Orlando because it was where she and Heng had wanted to move to before he died. She raised Lisa on her own, having difficulties being the first generation in America with fear of losing her daughter and learning the culture. Lisa told me a story of her first day of kindergarten knowing not a single word of English and being terrified of the policeman at the school. Obviously they were strong and successful together because Lisa now has a doctorate in pharmacology from UF and is a pharmacy manager. I have such an immense amount of respect for everything these ladies overcame to have a successful life in America, and because of the amazing person Lisa has become. She has such a genuine care for people that is amazing to watch.

Edgar then had his dance with his mother and also gave a beautiful speech about what she has done for her family. His mother and father, Lourdes and Eduardo, were married in the Philippines and moved to America where Eduardo became a cook in the Navy. They raised 3 boys, Edwin, Edwardo, and Edgar (he was the miracle baby because Lourdes was not supposed to be able to have any more children and 7 years after her second child, she had Edgar in Naples, Italy). When Edgar was 16, his dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was struggling through chemotherapy because he wanted to see Edgar graduate high school. He did not make it; as everyone thought he was getting better, he passed away. Edgar told of how his mother made a commitment to get all her children through college without debt and was able to achieve that goal as a single mother and how much respect he has for what she has accomplished. Both Lisa and Edgar’s mothers never want to remarry.

So one of the Cambodian traditions is to go around to each table to hand out favors and collect the cards... and apparently some guests believe in making you reach for it. Wasn't sure what was going on, but was VERY amused! :)

Cambodian American Wedding

If you haven't seen Lisa and Edgar's Cambodian Wedding Ceremony, first be sure to check out the links below!

Because of their Cambodian heritage with their American roots as well, Lisa and Edgar chose to have both wedding ceremonies on the same day. After the Cambodian Ceremony, we headed over to Golden Ocala for their equally gorgeous American ceremony.

And remember, there are MANY more pictures of this amazing event on Lindsey's blog, so if you love this wedding as much as we do, please check out her blog!

You may recall the knot tying Ceremony from the Cambodian Ceremony ~ the couple leaves the knots on until they fall off naturally. I loved the reminder of the previous Ceremony throughout the American one!

This was my first time doing this, but culturally Lisa and Ed were expected to do images with each guest in their receiving line after their Ceremony and with the perfect light and joyous guests it was actually quite enjoyable. Here is just one of the images:
