soOOooo not about fabric.

nope... if you are looking to get inspiration for a crafty project, just stop reading right now! LOL this post is about a girl who just wanted cute new blond hair ( with bangs! ). she kinda had good hair before her trip into the salon this week... but, that was all about to change. i hear everyone goes through this once... i dunno, i guess group suffering does make me feel a bit better, but then a little sad too... cause i don't want my kids crying too! ( yes, a whambulance was needed. )

here it is in all it's Hillary Clinton charm... good grief. it started off very mod, until i washed it the next morning after my run ( yes, yes... still trying to beat that back with a stick still too ). anyways, something went chemically wrong, real fast. let's just say clumps of singed hair was what was left....

so... a day later, another 4 hours in another salon, and probably 3 bottles of wine... this is what's left. please grow soon hair... the girl needs it!

i'm just real glad it's a Yammy night... cause, i need my lady friends something fierce!

Silver and Green – Prateado e verde

I’m still here, just too busy… Thanks for checking on me, everything is fine (I’ll reply to those who emailed me asking if everything is ok as soon as I can), but other aspects in life have been taking precedence over blogging lately…

So, here I am today wearing a pair of green pants I’ve just made (it’s V2973 minus the pockets; I’ll write a short review over at my sewing blog as soon as I get some spare time, along with a couple more simple projects You can read the sewing review here), paired with a lurex silver sweater, my light grey Melissa sandals and my new love (a Birthday gift from the boyfriend), the Vilamoura Anniversary edition Eletta watch (it’s a customizable watch with a lot of different colored bracelets and numbered disks; Eletta is a Portuguese brand using the best Swiss technology). I’m also wearing the Scissor pendant necklace that I’ve won from DeniseAngela’s monthly contest, along with other silver accessories.

Hugs to all, and thank you so much for remembering me!

what does spring mean...

garage sales of course! i'm working on mine as we speak... i'll be listing packages of goodness' on my esty shop soon! :) in an effort to be a grown up, i'm hoping to clear out some of my "younger" prints for other mama's that would love them ( and clean up my ever growing mess! ). They will be priced according to current market conditions, however... if you are one of my readers... please use this... { houseofalamode } as a coupon code to save yourself 20%!

word of advice. PLEASE do not hesitate to purchase a listing while you wait for others to show up. They will most likely not be there when you go to check out and it's so sad to me, when i hear how disappointed folks can become when this happens! ;) i will additionally correct shipping charges once the sales are completed.

thanks for all your support... i hope you find some treats!

it's those scraps!

i think it's the scraps ( the little rascals)! they seem to be the biggest, bulkiest, and messiest thing in my sewing room... but, dang it... they are just sooOOooo GOOD! and just to be very clear, this was debatable... until the past 2 days when i said to self, "are you really going to use these??" so, i sat down and started digging through them...

these are what i made and i must say, i think i'm about to just start cutting up my yardage to make more scraps! LOL...

i think i'd almost do it too... if i didn't keep buying these! m. u. s. t. make!

( thanks Fabricworm and Wondrous Wovens!! )

so, i guess i might spare these new treats from my lovely Canadian sponsor Dragonfly Fabrics! that and they are becoming impossible to find in the states! ( wink, wink ) :)

the hubby's off this weekend to play with his friends... aaahhhh... do here it..??? that's me fantasizing what i want to do more... read or sew??? OOohhh... the options! hehehe... Have a great one kids!!

i'm stuffed!

i am stuffed!! there is so much "stuff" in my studio... i can't put myself in there anymore! of course i know why i'm so stuffed ( "self" made me buy lots of fabric ), but i've actually allowed it to get so out of control... i can't get to my sewing machine anymore!! i'm completely embarrassed with myself and must... must clear some out! this is ridiculous!

i mean, how can i not... get some of this! it's just so right... right?? but, when you think in those terms so often, things can get a bit crazy! ;)

i have even started pulling out { idea quilt } fabrics to make more room... but then they just stack up too! ( i really want to make these into a new quilt for my oldest though! )...

yesterday, i made a rag quilt... just to use up a few yards of fabric quickly! desperate times call for desperate actions! i haven't made one of these quilts in like a year... but, i must say i enjoyed it! it's like your first car, has a special place in your heart...!

i finally decided ( after much consideration ) to reopen my Etsy shop to remove some of the stuff. i'm not sure what will end up in that shop, but hopefully it will lead a path to my sewing machine... to... well, make more stuff! LOL

Xo, Heather

Ayn Rand the Hypocrite

Today, Tax Day, a remake of Ayn Rand’s best seller opens here in Orange County. As might be expected, there’s been a lot of excitement among the local Objectivists, libertarians, and other pro-capitalists, who cherish having a feature film to call their own. I, on the other hand, am not exactly jumping up and down for joy.

Although I’ve self-identified as a libertarian for a nearly a decade now, my opinion of Ayn Rand has not improved as I’ve gotten to know more about her. Her position on religion was blasphemous, making man into God. Her tyrannical nature was antithetical to principles of liberty. And her greatest legacy is a Stalinistic personality cult that can only be described as laughable.

But most people prefer to focus on Ayn Rand’s libertarian ideas rather than her more embarrassing views. Whenever I met a faithful follower or passing admirer, I avoided conversation because a critique against her was always twisted into a rejection of laissez-faire economics and individual rights. But something changed this past January.

The Boston snow prevented me from doing a lot of sightseeing, so I spent time off work browsing at Borders and cooped up in the hotel reading my purchases. One was Ayn Rand and the World She Made. The author, Anne C. Heller, although confessing to be a non-Objectivist, is clearly an admirer and at times even an apologist for the literary icon. I expected to get a better understanding of Rand’s life, but I found more. Ayn Rand was no supporter of free markets.

Heller tirelessly recounts Ayn Rand’s unsuccessful career in Hollywood, editing others’ screenplays and trying to promote her own work. It’s not surprising that her books and screenplays were often not well received. She unabashedly wrote propaganda for her own views when audiences wanted to feel good about themselves. Her characters lacked proper development, primarily because she – like many female romance novelists – shied away from tarnishing her precious flawless heroes. And just like B-moviemakers today resort to tasteless jokes for cheap laughs, Rand fell back on an age-old promotional ploy: exciting “non-rape” rape scenes, the only reason why highschoolers ever read her books now.

Now, were many unfavorable reviews of her work a liberal media plot? Possibly. Was the mockery she received by the critics justified? Maybe not. But it still stands that the literary and film industries were unimpressed with her talents, and she was just too stubborn (or perhaps too perfect in her own eyes) to improve.

Any free-market economist worth his salt would say that the producer (Rand) should change to meet the wants of the consumers, find new consumers, or go out of business. Instead, Rand used the strong arm of the law to eliminate the competition and essentially force studios to purchase her work. How? By testifying for the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

Heller makes it clear that Rand’s stance towards real and imagined members of the Communist Party was unfair and inconsistent with her own political views. However, Rand did her best to discredit her opponents so that Hollywood was rid of screenwriters and screenplays that promoted ideas different from hers. And in the aftermath, when studios were frantically searching for “pro-capitalist, anti-Communist screen material,” Heller tells us that Rand was only too happy to comply.

So why even argue? Ayn Rand was not a champion of free markets. She actively used the state to gain monopolistic control when few people were interested in consuming her product. I’m not naïve enough to imagine that her many followers will ever come to terms with this fact, just as they choose to be blind about her deception and disregard for others’ individual rights. But perhaps from their perspective, the Objectivist she-god is not subject to her own laws.

passion & pooches???

do you have one of "those" friends?? you know the ones, they run on a higher leval of passion then the rest of us ( even with all the smutty books! )?? well... i do. i call her my "Elizabeth Taylor". and truth be told, i couldn't give her up, even if i was forced too! haha... well, let's just i envisioned her passion when i saw miss Amanda's newest tutorial. Have YOU seen it... it's bad new bears for sheba! you will drop everything to play along... priorities, children, whateves... cause it's that slick!

it's a scrapbusting triangle tut... and i definitely felt comfortable that i could spare a few to give it a whirl! ( good grief! )

now she was fabulously paitent in cutting out her triangles... me, not so much. i took some disgusting 12" scrapbooking paper and quartered it, then cut it diagonally... until i had triangles ( amanda's are cooler, but again... i'm lazy! ) ;P

i grabbed my box of neutral scraps and sewed those puppies together!

trimmed them up and threw'm up on the design borad! now in the land of Heather, we all know how much i love me some instant gratification, right ... so, i grabbed some passionate purple... and went about making a pillow :)

and voila...! with amanda's tut basics and my friends complicated passion... i made this! my (which really means, hers. ) Elizabeth Taylor pillow!

and.... Oh yeah, miss Laurie Wisbrun's newest fabric line { Pooches & Pickups } showed up this week! this is one seriously ADORBABLE line! i can't wait to cut into it, but alas... i am forced ( basically at gun point you realize ) to take a holiday with my husband this weeked! hahaha... so, i thought... i should do a give a way while i'm gone!

the deets: - i'll pick two winners on Monday! - leave a comment here with your favorite FQ quilt pattern! - get your booties over to Lauries blog and follow her cool ass! - if you blog about lauries fabric... you can leave another comment!!

Xoxo here's to having a FABulous weekend! Xo, Heather
